A Guide To Creating SEO Friendly Search Results URLs With Property Hive

3rd April 2017

In this guide we’ll look at how you can turn those long search results URL’s into shorter, SEO friendly URL’s in just a few seconds.

When you’re running a stock copy of Property Hive on your estate agency WordPress website, you might’ve noticed that when performing a property search the URL’s can sometimes look like so:
http://yoursite.com/property-search/?department=residential-sales&minimum_price=&maximum_price=&minimum_rent=&maximum_rent=&minimum_bedrooms=&property_type=
Depending on the number of fields in your search form, the URL might be even longer than this. It’s not very nice to look at, it’s not easy to share, and it’s not as optimised as it could be for SEO purposes.

As a result, we took a few hours out of our day to try and address this and have come with a solution which means that your URL’s can now look like so:
http://yoursite.com/property-search/department/residential-sales/maximum_price/300000
This change means that only parameters which include a value are included in the URL making it a lot shorter. It also means that the URL can be easily shared with others.

To implement this change, simply head over to the new page in our documentation and add the code described to your theme’s functions.php file. In the future we’ll definitely look at adding this as a feature to the core plugin but we want to test it with various URL structures and environments first. We hope you’ll be able to use this in the meantime however.
